Ghajini Review

Ghajini, the movie
We were waiting for this one for several reasons- Aamir’s eight pack, it’s the remake of hit Tamil movie, and the fact that Aamir does only one movie a year. Naturally, the hype created around Ghajini was overwhelming. Mr Perfectionist had pushed the envelope for himself to get pally with the media for the film’s promotion. While he manages to impress us withal that, the movie, I think, should have matched him. Sanjay Singhania, a business tycoon, falls in love with Kalpana, a struggling model with a golden heart. But before they can reach their happily ever after, misfortune strikes hard and Sanjay loses Kalpana as well as his memory in a case of Anterograde amnesia. With only 15 minutes each day of his ‘real’ self, Sanjay manages to keep everything together by tattoos on his body, notes, maps, a camera that rings every 15 minutes. The psycho killer goes around killing everybody involved with lady love’s murder, only to be stumped before reaching the main culprit. Whether or not he is able to do that is for you to watch.

Yes, the story behind the perfect torso is making headlines, but the scene where we are introduced to Bollywood’s new found Greek God is wrongly placed. His writings on his body hold the links to the tragedy that he is trying to avenge, and the body is perfectly sculpted. What does a viewer concentrate on when he is given both? No points for guessing the answer. Jiah Khan, as the medical student Sunita, is unconvincing, and the villain Pradeep Rawat (why would they name the film on the villain anyway?), does not sound villainous enough. Throughout the length of the movie one can taste the South Indian flavor in the movie. The song ‘Guzarish’ reminds you of ‘Suraj hua madham’, and forgive me ifI’m taking this too far but Aamir does remind you of SRK when he says, ‘Main hun na’.

Forgive all that, Aamir belts out a wonderful performance that Asin complements quite confidently. From a lovable lover to one who is tortured and on a killing spree, he gives nothing but his best. The story by director AR Murugadoss (or Momento!) is good one. A pacy plot, few touching moments, some that make you smile, Ghajini is a one time watch. My rating: 3/5 (that’s for the abs!)
