Homos allowed in India!
Written by Anurag Bhateja on July 2, 2009 – 11:26 am -I do not know if I should say its a good news or bad. It is like who am I to comment if it is good or bad! I am straight! Anyway, jokes apart, from last many days I am watching updates on allowing Homos in India. As till date or I should say till judgment, being homo was an offense and is punishable upto for 10 years in prison under IPC 377. But as of the latest judgment by Delhi high Court, if two adults no matter if both of them are of same sex, are above the age of 18 years, they are free to live together and have homo relationship. In simple words, criminalization of homo has been removed from Article 377.
It is not the thing that India do not have history of homos. In famous book by Vatsanya, Kamasutra, homos have been discussed. All those who have read/seen Mahabharata on TV/listened stories about it must have knowledge of the character Shikhandi. In many autobiographies of kings have this thing discussed. Erotic temples of India have some statues which depicts homos.
After arrival of British in India, homos were banned under law. After a long fight, now the NGOs working for G-Rights have won the case (it seems). Still the details are to be revealed.
But I am curious to see what steps are going to be taken by Govt. in:
1. Rapes in homos?
2. Avoiding sex workers in homos?
3. Bi’s?
These are only three small questions which came in my mind. There is a long trail of questions, discussions and too much debate on this topic. Lets see whats hidden in future. More information will be posted here soon.
